X11 hasn't been trapped in /usr/X11 nor /usr/X11R6 for many years now. Many other OSs install it straight into /usr now, but we prefer the isolation as it keeps X11 separate from the rest of OSX (and we need to have it there for ABI compatibility concerns).

Prior to Snow Leopard,OS Updates and Security Updates would break any installs of X11 newer than the official version, causing you to have to reinstall each OSX update. The XQuartz version is the latest version being developed. The official OSX version lags because a stable version of XQuartz must be beta tested in the OSX updates before Apple will officially release it.
It's more than just the beta testing aspect, although qualification is a *HUGE* part of it. For SUs, we want to minimize change in order to minimize risk and keep the download size small. You probably won't see things like updates to xlsclients, xwininfo, etc unless there is a security concern. Additionally, anyone really interested in running the latest XQuartz will be downloading it from macosforge or building it on MacPorts anyway, so there's really no reason to push changes other than the bare minimum security and stability fixes into an SU.

Yeah, and please also test out the 2.6.0 alpha2 release. 2.6.0 beta1 is around the corner (I'm waiting for things to settle with X11R7.6, libX11 1.4, and xorg-server-1.9.1 first)

If you want to install the system X11, you need to install X11User.pkg from your SL DVD, then you need to run the latest *COMBO* update for Snow Leopard. _______________________________________________
