Wise choice. Even going always back to pre Xquartz days to XDarwin, stuff has always been installed outside /usr/X11. Programs like Gimp and Inkscape install straight to /Applications (Easy to open or trash if I want.). The folders in /usr are invisible for a reason. I am an advanced user and I don't like to go mucking around in those folders.
