Hello Brandon
First, thanks for pointing it out to me. Somehow I did not
realize, that the mailing list also was a recipient of your e-mail.

fabian@colossus:~ $ defaults write org.x.X11 dpi -int 72
Somebody pointed out to me in a private e-mail, that it probably should be
'defaults write org.macosforge.xquartz.X11 -int 72', which now works. I
found the original command I used with org.x.X11 in the FAQ [1] almost at
the end of page with title "Default resolution too low? Fonts too small?".
Is this only different (new) for OS X 10.8?
org.x.X11 is for the system X11.app, which no longer exists on 10.8;
XQuartz uses org.macosforge.xquartz.X11, and MacPorts uses org.macports.X11
(I think, by inference from other examples). Elsewhere in the FAQ you can
find an incantation that will adapt to the running X11 within .xinitrc.d
($X11_PREFS_DOMAIN), but that doesn't help from outside and it's too late
to set the server's DPI when anything in the .xinitrc chain runs.
In the past I did use X11.app from OS X 10.6.x and I always
changed the DPI to 72 with org.x.X11. I did the direct jump to OS
X 10.8 (fresh install) and somehow in my first tries I did use
org.macosforge.xquartz.X11 as it seemed to be the correct thing
to me. Then it did not work, I searched and found the FAQ with
org.x.X11 and it also did not work. Then I found the two entries,
that it is fixed in 2.7.3 rc 2, which then again first did not
work, until I did set it again in org.macosforge.xquartz.X11, as
during my tries I also did delete the corresponding files in
~/Library/Preferences/.
PS: No need to use "reply all", reply only to the list is
perfect, as I do filter e-mails based on the "List-Id" header line.
bye
Fabian
