Thanks, Jeremy and Brandon, for the info. For whatever reason, it wasn't happening for me under Lion and earlier versions of Xquartz.
I wonder if it would make sense to include a link to the FAQ page in the sidebar on the Xquartz start page, to avoid such noobish questions. believe it or not, I did look for one before asking.
