XQuartz.app and X11.app use different preference domains. You probably set it long ago for X11.app and forgot about it.
Also, the xterm only launches if you started X11 by launching the app directly (not if you opened it indirectly by running an X11 application), so maybe your use case was a little different.

Maybe. I'm a terrible web designer. I'm lucky that I can use a wiki to help me out with that. If I had to design the site entirely myself, it would be even more of a mess ;)
