I've had this problem for a while (several versions of XQuartz, IIRC),
and I'm now looking for others who are suffering from the same problem
and who can shed some light on the problem.
I use XQuartz in full-screen mode (being an old Unix dog ;-). Every now
and then (actually regularly every X minutes) XQuartz will just flip and
take me to the Aqua screen. XQuartz is still the active program, and all
I have to do is to type Alt-Cmd-A, click in the window I was working in,
and I'm back. But it's annoying to have your train of thoughts
interrupted by your screen playing cheeky tricks at you. ;-)
On my laptop (15" MBP from 2010, MacOS X 10.6.7, XQuartz 2.7.2_beta1)
this has been going on for a while (6 months? A year?) but now it just
happened on my desktop (30" iMac from 2011, MacOS X 10.6.8, just loaded
the most recent security update!, XQuartz 2.7.2_beta4) which, so far,
has _not_ showed this behaviour.
On my laptop I've put it down to "some application" running in the
background that does something periodically which tricks Aqua into
"reclaiming" the screen, and I've found a couple of likely suspects. My
best candidates have been the support software for the varia of mobile
networking dongles that I seem to have acquired over the years. ;-) They
usually install a background deamon or two for good measure (and,
allegedly, to look for updates ;-), so I've tried to kill them off in
"launchdaemon land" - mostly successfully so. After that it seems
like the problem happened less often.
I have not had reason to use these dongles on my iMac, so I have
(AFAICT) not installed said support software there. Still it just
happened, so I'm now looking to my fellow X11 nerds.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any clue as to why?
Best regards,
/Lars-Johan Liman
