You are remembering correctly. With the standard 802.11b network you
lose because of the slow networking speeds. To really get the best
performance out of distributed builds, you need to minimize the cost of
transferring the files and our tests show that this occurs at 100mbps
(Gigabit ethernet could be even better depending on the network
traffic).
I'll soon have my Ethernet cable delivered so will be able to report
some timings. For me, my primary machine will be a dual 2 GHz G5 and
my secondary machine will be a dual 500 MHz G4. Fortunately, both
machines sport Gigabit Ethernet and I will be able to use a normal
cable (didn't need a crossover type since the machines I have can do
the auto-sensing/switching as needed). I ordered a Belkin FastCAT 5e
cable.
I'm really curious to know what the G4 will do with the data it gets in
terms of just keeping it in RAM or using the hard drive. The hard
drive is not that speedy on the G4.
I'll also experiment with using the G4 as the primary machine and see
if there's any difference.
