Ali
I checked some other apps, and the behavior varies, but most of the
ones i did try *didn't* grey out all the toolbar icons when the window
lost focus and *were* single-clickable, such as Mail app.
ITunes and the finder adhere to the new style though, so it would seem
as though Apple is trying to unify that sort of behavior, which frankly
baffles me. What is the benefit to the user?
Immense.
Given a random arrangement of windows, it's really easy to
accidentally click on a toolbar button in a window that's otherwise
covered by other windows. If the toolbar accepts clicks when it's not
frontmost, you can lose data without really knowing it. (Note that
Mail disables the Delete button in toolbars of inactive windows to
prevents this.)
IMO controls should be active in non-front windows only in very well
thought out circumstances. I'm actually not thinking of any (though
grabbing icons in a background Finder window comes close).
So if Xcode is disabling toolbar items when windows aren't in the
front, it's adhering to the Mac user interface.
