It sounds like you would like to work in single-window-mode, as in PB, rather than in few-window-mode, as in Xcode. Why have separate windows per mode at all, when you could have had the single window of PB where you switched between modes using tabs?

In my case, because screen space is tight, it suits me better to have different window layouts depending on what I am doing.

For example, when I am writing code, the Groups & Files listing is useful to me, so the Main Editor window works well. I rarely make use of the Details pane, so that is generally minimised to only show one or two entries.

When I am building, I have no real interest in the Groups & Files listing, but I do care about the build log and the console etc, so the Build Results window suits me best.

I'm just curious why you bash the comments from the proponents of single-window-mode, when it sounds like you try to emulate that environment as best as Xcode allows.

I'm not trying to bash others' comments. I'm just trying to defend Xcode, because I find it quite usable.

I like having separate windows for general editing, debugging, finding in the project, docs, building. Each window is designed to do one task and do it well without wasting any unnecessary space. The attached editors mean that I only have to switch out of each of these "work spaces" when I want to move onto another task of a totally different type. Having separate windows also means that its easy for me to see what I was doing the last time I visited each "work space".
