Excellent. Thanks for the quick response. After entering the gdb print command directly, the expressions window works as expected. Must be some sort of very first time used problem. I cannot recreate at all now.

(gdb) print globalVariable

and see if that works. If this does work, then there is some bug in the Expressions window. If you can file a bug with a small example that shows this happening, that would be very helpful. If it doesn't work, maybe you will see some error message that will help us figure out what is going on.
