To attach a running application to MallocDebug, you must link the program with libMallocDebug. It's much easier to launch your program from MallocDebug.

I have a preliminary version of the MallocDebug chapter of my upcoming book available to download at http://www.meandmark.com/xcodebook.html . You may find it helpful.
