Got it, everyone. It's the username.mode1 file that needs to be removed.
any word on why this happens?

Sometimes, the variable list is just plain blank. Here's an example:

I have checked, and the debugger _is_ running. I can interact with it
on the console. But I've been relying on the GUI lately.
