Is anyone else seeing my mail as nearly illegible?
Yup. Source code fonts were way too small.
Additionally, I don't like it too much when the sender imposes his
selection of fonts on me.
Usually I just skip mails that are hard to read ...
So I agree with Justin that plain text is the right format for email
- and especially mailing lists - most of the time.
OK. I often do that, but I figured that since people here were likely
to be using Mail, there wouldn't be a problem.
Plus, I pasted the source code directly from Xcode, where my font is
set to Monaco Regular 10pt (yes, I just checked), so it doesn't make a
lot of sense to me why this acted so weird.
The reason that the source text appears to small, is that it is
formatted with an additional attribute "smaller" in your mail message.
Its font size is not explicitly set. This means, the font is the same
as its embedding or default font, but the size is smaller.
It looks like, that when your default font in Mail is Monaco 12, and
you paste a text into it with font in Monaco 10, then this peace of
text will be formatted with an additional "smaller" attribute.
Now suppose, the receiver gets this mail and his default font in his
Mail.app is Monaco 10. Since your source code text has been formatted
with a "smaller" attribute within the message, this piece of text might
be displayed in Monaco 8 -- thus the differences.
I guess, your default font in Mail is NOT Monaco 10. ;-)
