FWIW, /tmp's contents doesn't suddenly vanish. Files there get erased
at boot time or if they are several days old. I'm not even sure about
the latter in Mac OS X.
So, you can expect files in /tmp to stay as long as you use them from
time to time. Additionally, unlike e.g. your Home, you can expect /
tmp always to be on a fast, local file system.
