The application I have in mind is something I have always wanted to
build. If I am going to learn, I would rather stumble on the piece I
am destined to create. I understand that I will have to rewrite it
several times, as I learn new things, and that is fine with me.

That is not so. My plan is to build and run on OS X. However, I have
several friends that are on other platforms. I want to be able to
share my application with them.

Ah, so I can tap into the Mac-only features using Cocoa and Carbon but
will have to write the code in either Obj-C or Java. Thank you for
clarifying that. Now I just have to understand what Cocoa and Carbon
are commonly used for.

This makes sense. What are most web-based applications written in
that are running on Mac? What about compiled applications?

It certain is a good start. Thank you, Markus.
