The DVI connector on the Transition Kit machines is DVI-D only; it's missing the 4 extra pins that carry an analog signal on DVI-I. Hence, with the DVI, you can only use a digital display. They do make DVI-D->VGA convertors, but they are not worth it - about $400. The deal Shaun mentions is probably the best deal available for a good DVI monitor. I got the 17 inch Dell which was on sale for under $250 in July; and it's brightness puts my powerbook to shame.

Someone at Apple told me that there's on-board VGA, but they need a special cable to tap into it; they didn't give the developers the special cable, it seems.
