I too was bitten by this one. I spent the better part of a day running from store to store trying to find an adapter that would work with the Transition Kit, I had never seen a DVI-D connector before. It was only after I had given up and started googling for an online store that would sell me one that I found out that there is no DVI-D to VGA adapter because the D in DVI-D stands for Digital Only, meaning that there was no analog signal to output to a VGA monitor.

I've already expressed my extreme displeasure with DTS, at the very least they could have put a note that says that the video out will only work with a Digital monitor. That's all I would have needed and it would have saved me a few hours of lost work. Not to mention the fact that instead of just using some old monitor that we had lying around I had to go steal a very nice LCD monitor from another workstation just to get the DTK up and running. How many other developers are going to have to shell out money on a new monitor for a system that they'll have to return in a year and a half?

It wasn't a very good move by Apple if you ask me.

The DVI connector on the Transition Kit machines is DVI-D only; it's missing the 4 extra pins that carry an analog signal on DVI- I. Hence, with the DVI, you can only use a digital display. They do make DVI-D->VGA convertors, but they are not worth it - about $400. The deal Shaun mentions is probably the best deal available for a good DVI monitor. I got the 17 inch Dell which was on sale for under $250 in July; and it's brightness puts my powerbook to shame.

Someone at Apple told me that there's on-board VGA, but they need a special cable to tap into it; they didn't give the developers the special cable, it seems.
