Deleting "<YourUserName>.pbxuse" didn't help. However, there was
another file, "<YourUserName>.mode1" that I deleted that did the trick.
What is the .mode1 file?
Thanks for the help!

That somewhat works--if I toggle the layout, I now DO see the
variable panes correctly (now in the bottom left), with the code in
the right 1/2 of the pane). However, toggling back doesn't reset the
variable pane to what it should be when the code's on the bottom.
At least now I know that I can get to a variable pane that's useful,
when I need to. It DOES have something to do with my project,
though--other projects have the "correct" variable pane. I've tried
deleting my "build" folder and rebuilding, but that hasn't helped.
Control click on the project and delete the files called
<YourUserName>.pbxuser
