Link failure using SDKs

When building on Mac OS X 10.4 using the 10.3.9 SDK, how do I link against a library that is in /usr/local/lib?

I have /usr/local/lib in my library search paths, but the link phase fails with:

Ld /Marketocracy/Frameworks/MFoundation.framework/Versions/A/ MFoundation normal ppc
cd /Users/mlaster/InProgress/trunk/Frameworks/MFoundation
setenv MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET 10.3
/usr/bin/gcc-4.0 -o /Marketocracy/Frameworks/ MFoundation.framework/Versions/A/MFoundation -L/Users/mlaster/Library/ Caches/Xcode/trunk -L/Users/mlaster/Library/Caches/Xcode/trunk -L/usr/ local/lib -F/Users/mlaster/Library/Caches/Xcode/trunk -F/Users/ mlaster/Library/Caches/Xcode/trunk -F/Library/Frameworks -F/ Marketocracy/Frameworks -filelist "/Users/mlaster/Library/Caches/ Xcode/trunk/MFoundation.build/MFoundation (Framework).build/Objects- normal/ppc/MFoundation.LinkFileList" -framework Foundation -framework FBAccess -lz -framework CoreServices -lcrypto -lssl -framework Spread -arch ppc -Wl,-single_module -dynamiclib -compatibility_version 1 - current_version 1 -install_name /Marketocracy/Frameworks/ MFoundation.framework/Versions/A/MFoundation -isysroot /Developer/ SDKs/MacOSX10.3.9.sdk -Wl,-syslibroot,/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.3.9.sdk
ld: warning can't open dynamic library: /Developer/SDKs/ MacOSX10.3.9.sdk/usr/local/lib/libspread.1.0.dylib (checking for undefined symbols may be affected) (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

It seems to be looking for /usr/local/lib relative to the SDK root even though /usr/local/lib isn't part of the SDK.

How can I make this link without having to manually hack the contents of Developer/SDKs ?
