Yes, xCode is indeed maddening.

One thing that helps speed the GUI a bit is turning off the 'status
bar' (view menu). Also, xCode deals poorly with large text files, try
to keep them small. Also, it seems from discussions on this list that
xCode can be reasonably performant with tiny projects, but once you have
a few hundred files, it gets glacial. xCode also doesn't seem to like
having many windows open at once, it's faster with fewer windows. Your
milage may vary.

Your loss. 10.4 is faster than 10.3, and I wouldn't return to xCode 1.5
if you paid me, 2.2 is much better.
