Xcode does support external editors. You can set the editor for a particular file type using the File Types pane of the Xcode preferences.

Xcode _does_ support external editors - for editing.

Unfortunately, Xcode uses its editor for more than editing (debugging, for example), and I know of no way to use an external editor for that - so you are stuck with it.

[ Just checked - opening a 13K text file, containing 362 lines of text - it was more than two seconds from the time the text finished drawing until the function popup appeared. Dual G5/2GHz, 2GB ram, Xcode 2.1 ]
