Carbon (Mac OS 9 and prior) had a notion of a Temporary Items folder into which an Application could cache away temporary files. If the App crashed, the temporary files would be left behind and could often be used to recover potentially lost data. That tech note refers to the automatic recovery of said items upon boot.
