linking Universal Binary performance

Is there any way to serialize the linking phase for Universal Binaries so that it doesn't try to link both the PowerPC and Intel binaries at the same time?

Doing so brings my computer to a grinding halt.

Of course, I still want to use all four processors for compiling.
