The amount of RAM installed makes a big difference here. With our project, my 1GB machine also grinds to a halt, though the 2GB machine has no problems (it had serious problems when it only had 512MB installed).

Is there any way to serialize the linking phase for Universal Binaries so that it doesn't try to link both the PowerPC and Intel binaries at the same time?
