Xcode works well? That's news to me.

I see none of the performance issues you listed on my PowerMac Quad or MacBook Pro (except for a slow down on really large source files... which you have to wonder why that are that large to begin with).

Regarding (9) you try using DWARF? It greatly reduced the size of
debug and symboled release builds.
