Glenn,
    A project in Xcode can consist of multiple
targets; and it thus generates multiple binaries.
Thus, the project settings are more of a general
nature, while the terget settings direct the Xcode to
build a particular kext/framework (basically
binaries).

That's the reason it was not working out for  you when
you had modifies the project settings rather than the
setting for your target.
