What about poorer
people that can't afford broadband? Not all "developers" work for
Fortune 500 companies in office towers with T1s.
You hardly have to work for a Fortune 500 company to have broadband,
at least not in places like the U.S, Canada, Japan, Europe and
others. Over 50% of the people with Internet access in the U.S. have
a broadband connection. People use cable modems, DSL, and even
satellite services to get broadband connectivity. I can get DSL for
$20/month, and that hardly qualifies as available only to the ultra
rich. I hear high speed cable access in Canada is even cheaper than
it is here.
Not trying to get too off topic here, but let's back up here and look
at this from another viewpoint: nearly 50% of the people with
Internet access DON'T have a broadband connection. Neither the cable
companies nor the phone companies are willing to spend the money to
run their broadband services out here, despite an increasing
population density and vocal calls for their services. As it stands,
I am lucky to get a 21.6 dialup connection, because the wires haven't
been upgraded in 20+ years. This isn't some third world, this is New
England.
I've had to find alternative solutions to my connection needs,
primarily involving driving into town and leeching bandwidth off the
college wireless network. Interestingly, this actually leaves me as
more of a proponent of NOT doing delta updates, because this way I
can download one file and bring it back to my desktops at home
without having to worry about whether I've missed an update in
between. If others want to use delta updates, that's their call, but
I for one appreciate the standalones.
