iTunes (up to and including 7.0.1, and also in at least 5.x - 6.x)
reads all music in bursts of 16-64 KB (not MB) seemingly mostly
depending on the bitrate of the song. I do not have 7.0.2 yet.
So yes, it is playing the file from disk. It also opens the files
in a way that they are never added to the disk cache (I guess
F_NOCACHE or so), so playing a song multiple times in a row will
not change this behaviour.
Has anyone filed a bug against iTunes for this? Seems like that would
be more useful than dissecting how iTunes works. ;-) Then maybe
they'll fix it for 7.0.3.
