I tend toward having a several dozen windows open at a
time, and yes, I like to actually be able to see the
contents of multiple files at the same time. At times, a
dozen of those windows would be project-wide searches (of
the current project and sometimes another, too) when I
worked in Code-Warrior.
But I tend to keep them in stair-step stacks. I've been
coping with the "tabs" metaphor in Safari, and for many web
browsing tasks it's OK, but for SW development falls short.
Yes, I do tend to open and close them individually, and
because the tools don't stack them well, I find myself
tweaking their positions on the screen. In QUED/M, one of
my personal mods was to allow me to change the rise and run
of the stacking, but I don't think we ever released it.
With all of the differently sized monitors and multiple
monitors, one size definitely does not fit all.
The "all in one" format doesn't suit me at all, but I
understand that some prefer it. It is "neat" and
"clutterless", but is kind of like working with blinders on
or peering through a paper-towel or gift-wrap tube at the
world. What they call clutter, I see as opening up my
horizons, breaking out of the constrictive box, being able
to see a little bit of context, see how things are related
or interact.
For the last few years of the Clinton-Bush depression, I've
been nursing along a 400MHz Pismo with a tiny little
monitor (12.25" by 8.5", working with the resolution
cranked up as high as it will go; though I was able briefly
to hitch up a CRT), now running Xcode 1.5. Poverty bites.
I read the manuals, but all of the newer stuff is mere
abstraction. Life goes on and the Red Queen says we have to
run as fast as we can just to stay where we are.
