Go to Cheetah3D's "Help", and there is a tutorial called "Making Mac OS X icons".

Wow... talk about the answer being right in front of my nose.

Thanks for pointing that out for me.

To all,

Is it possible to use the standard Apple icons, such as the highlighted ones below (from iWeb)?

Those aren't really "standard" icons, but to answer your question:

- Sure it's possible. You just copy the appropriate files to your application Resources folder and use them.

- Is it legal? No.

- Does Apple's legal department have better things to do than come after you for using a few of their icons? Probably.

I wouldn't hesitate to use them during development. I'd provide my own for release. In the case of the icons you highlighted, they're so bland and boring that you could probably come up with a variation of them yourself that would look as good. A professional icon designer could do something even better. And remember, if you need others you can't appropriate you'll want a consistent look among all of them.

It's better not to attach graphics when posting messages. Post the image on a server somewhere and provide a link to it in your message. People who get messages in digest form don't get attachments, and there's no reason for people not following the thread to download images. However, in this case the image wasn't useful. If the icons are in someone else's application, it doesn't really matter how "standard" they appear to be.

The only information I could dig up was on the java-dev list <http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2005/Apr/msg00049.html>, which says we're not officially allowed to use the Apple icons. Is this still true?

As far as I know, yes.

Larry
