I believe the issue here is that users find the whole concept of a
file which appears on the desktop like a disk to be fairly
confounding. You are not the average user. Thus IDME images become
nothing more than a glorified archive format which plays quite nicely
with Safari etc.
now, having an archive format which requires the execution of so much
privileged code in the kernel is a bit ridiculous, but that's sort of
another issue entirely...

I'm not sure why it should be expected. Most of the third-party
products whose disk images I download do not use Internet-enabled
disk images, so I expect to see a disk image file I can mount,
examine its contents, unmount, mount again, and so on.

I won't go so far as to call them the work of the devil, but I don't
want one for my product and I don't expect or want them when I
download other products.
