Several days ago I ran into the following problem recently and was
wondering if anyone could offer an explanation. I was trying to use
the Finder to create a zip file of my entire project. In the middle
of the process I got a message saying "A file reference could not be
created." Now, aside from the fact that this is a terrible message
according to the HIG, I tracked it down to a copy of my application
in the build folder that Xcode creates. I can't remember if it was
the debug or release build, but when I removed it the archive could
be created. So I trashed that build folder and let Xcode recreate and
rebuild everything in it. Then today I see the same problem again. I
can duplicate the folder, and if I replace the bad folder with a copy
of itself, the archive can be competed and the bad copy can be
trashed just fine.

I don't know the details for this particular problem, but the built- in zip /
unzip method certainly has some bugs. For example, it cannot be used to zip
my app for distribution, because the end-user won't be able to unzip it.
This is due to errors when there are symlinks inside the material to be
zipped (and there are in my app, because a framework is embedded in the
bundle).

Something similar might be happening in your case. m.

This has just happened a couple of times recently, and nothing has changed in my application bundle to cause it. I can duplicate the build folder, remove the original copy, and it will zip fine. Very weird IMO.
