the built-in zip /
unzip method certainly has some bugs. For example, it cannot be used to zip
my app for distribution, because the end-user won't be able to unzip it.
This is due to errors when there are symlinks inside the material to be
zipped (and there are in my app, because a framework is embedded in the
bundle).

hdiutil create -format UDBZ -srcfolder MyApp.app -volname MyApp -o MyApp.dmg

A bit a lengthy command, but disk images are more convenient anyways. Hdiutil takes care to use an ordinary folder as volume root but to create a root if you provide single files or bundles.
