XIB Confusion - Updated One appears in IB - Older One in XCODE Build Process

| Using xcode 3.1 to build a small app -- being frustrated by xcode source file management -- and I'm new to xcode, perhaps you've run into this:
When I open MainMenu.xib, Interface Builder uses my latest version.
When I build the app, xcode uses an older version of my mainmenu.xib.
When I search for the files in Spotlight, only the latest one appears in the finder list.
Where does xcode hide the older mainmenu.xib?
How can I get build to use the latest version?
