A little-known Xcode feature is the Favorites Bar, which you can enable from the View > Layout submenu. It's just like the one in Safari — you can drag files, or entire groups, up to it and they stick there until you drag them out. Then you can go to a file with one click, or a file in a group with two. While it doesn't automatically track the 'hot' files, it's so easy to configure that you can update it on the fly while you work.
