I installed today's software updates (Safari 3.1 and Security Update
2008-002) and now Xcode 3.0 starts up like a charm 32- and 64-bit
modes. I'd still love to know what was broken and how it got fixed.
Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Does it only crash when you have a particular project open?
If so, it might be due to a corrupted index: open Xcode, go to
preferences -> Code Sense and turn off indexing, open the project,
then turn on indexing again. This will re-index your project, and if
the crash is due to a corrupted index, it should make the crash go
away.

I've already sent the problem report to Apple via the Problem
Report dialog. Should I also report it via developer.apple.com just
to be sure?
Has anyone else seen or heard of this? I've spent a lot of time
looking online, but can't find anything about it. I've uninstalled
and reinstalled Xcode. If I let it fail a couple of times, it
offers to Relaunch & Reset and that lets Xcode run one time. The
next time, it's back to crashing at startup.
Xcode appears to work fine as long as I don't run in 32-bit mode. I
read somewhere that the iPhone SDK expects/requires you to run in
32-bit mode.
Thanks,

I recently upgraded to Xcode 3.0, but it crashes on startup

here? I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 on a MacBook.
Perhaps you could add a bit more information, like a backtrace to
the crash?
You should also probably file a proper bug report:
