I have to disagree with Douglas on this one (he won't mind ;) )

There are already folders on your disk that are excluded from backups and always have been I think (i.e various cache folders etc) that thankfully the user doesn't have to configure to be not backed up.

As with much good Apple/Mac software, the default choice is to do what is going to be sensible for the majority of users most of the time. Without this forethought from Apple (and others) there would be more useless crud filling up Time Machine, thereby reducing the lifespan of backups. E.g thankfully VMWare automatically exclude their VMs from being backed up as this would totally kill TM every hour and would be unlikely to be recoverable anyway.

I am also sure (or would hope) that Xcode also exclude the various shared precompiled headers folders from the backup too by default. I don't want to go hunting these down - I know they exist, but I don't want to have to care where they are and manually add them to TM.

Hi,

I am with JP on this, until this thread I did not know that folders could be excluded from Time Machine without being explicitly set that way by me. I appreciate that backing up a builds folder is not ideal, as it changes too often and can be recreated easily enough, but I should be in control of the decision. It's the principle that is the issue. It's my computer, not Apple's.

I would like Xcode to have a preference to enable this 'auto- exclude' behavior, and better still when that preference is enabled it should add the folders to Time Machine's exclude list so that I have visibility on the excluded folders.

Now that this functionality is more widely known, I can foresee it being abused by software designers who do not want parts of their applications or data backed up for whatever reason.

Douglas
