Developers need not abuse this com.apple.XcodeGenerated extended attribute to achieve this end. It's fully supported by Backup Core, the technology behind Time Machine. See the docs for CSBackupSetItemExcluded.


Apple encourages application developers to exclude from backup files and folders which the developer deems should not be backed up. Things like caches, that can be rebuilt on demand. Or things like temporary files. Etc.
