In Xcode 3, the pop-up with suggestions shows up only if you press the
Escape button. I wonder if there's a hack, or a trick, or a tool that can
automatically invoke the Escape button every time you start typing a new
word in Xcode?

Create a new account. Log out, then login to the new account. Open Xcode 3, create a new project, and see if the auto-completion works, or whether it still requires Escape. If it works, then the problem is some setting in your old account's Xcode preferences file. If it still requires Escape, then something else is wrong. Double-check for InputManagers, application enhancers, etc. that might affect apps system-wide.
It's important that you do this on a new account, with no existing preferences, no added extensions, etc.

You can have Xcode 2.5 installed at the same time as Xcode 3, so de- install of 2.5 won't be needed.
