First, there has to be a way to let the developers of xcode know
that this kind of thing can happen. Someone else replied to my
message saying that the same thing happened to him (only that he
had a backup).
Just to clarify.. A shader took out my machine, and I was unable to
ssh in, or resolve the problem any other way than a hard shutdown.
A shader should not really do this, but these things happen, and
obviously the crash was severe enough to prevent XCode completing a
write of a file, or perhaps the file system to do the same.
I don't think this is really a failing in XCode per. se.
The moral of the story is to take advantage of backups and automate it.
There are ample free services. Mozy, DropBox, and for those who are
wealthy MobileMe! ;-)
Another method is to dump your code base to a USB thumb drive once a
day.
Most code bases will fit comfortable on a 1 or 2G card, and I
personally use them like candy because they are so cheap.
Fill one up, stick it in a draw. Forget about it and unwrap another!
Once in a draw and they'll survive pretty much anything, other than a
nuclear blast! You can even wash them in your trousers!
