The reason was that the app was taking some time to load and when run on device, it will crash automatically if it takes longer that a certain time.
When launched from xcode, the app will not crash even if it takes long time to load.

Yes you can get the crash logs off the phone if you plug the phone in, then go look for the device browser. You can also download a separate device manager app, the name of which now totally escapes me, which lets you manage provisioning profiles as well as other device features in one place .. you can get the crash logs from there too.
