This happens to me so frequently with the latest Xcode that the debugger is almost useless. Major step backwards.
I have created an issue with a GDB log, and samples:
rdar://8328096
Let me know if I can provide any further information. My entire team is experiencing this, so it is a big impediment to our work.
Looking forward to LLDB -- hopefully it will not be as frustrating.

If you have a case where the debugger stalls while you are debugging, make sure you have the Xcode/gdb log turned on. You turn this on in the Debugging tab of the Xcode Preferences - N.B. you have to turn this on before you start the debugging session. Then when the debugger stalls, also sample gdb and sample the app you are debugging. Then file a bug (bugreporter.apple.com) with the Xcode/gdb log and the two samples, and we can take a look.
