Project Window editor pane

Is there anyway to stop or "turn off" the editor pane from appearing in the Project window whenever a file is selected? I find it really irritating. When I open a file that does not belong to the project, it does not open in a seperate window, it opens in the Project window as a editor pane. The preferences give no way of doing so.
