Obviously, having a compiler installed on the machine made
compromising it easier, otherwise I don't know why they went
through the trouble of uploading source code and compiling it
rather than immediately uploading a binary.
Perhaps they exploited a hole which allows text or very small sized
uploads, only. Like a 'main{system("chmod +s /bin/bash");}' embedded
in an URL or HTML text field.
