And headers, and (in case of Linux) development versions of libraries, both appropriate for your system (kernel version, used libraries, cpu architecture).

Obviously, having a compiler installed on the machine made compromising it easier, otherwise I don't know why they went through the trouble of uploading source code and compiling it rather than immediately uploading a binary. I guess they simply used an automated exploit scanner, in which case not having to detect and provide different binaries for all possible target OSes & architectures is quite useful.
