1. What happens to the app whose provisioning profile expires? Will it still run?
2. If not, is there a way to just update the profile in iPhone/iPod without changing the app executable?

Then select Provisioning tab (assuming it is a development profile that is expiring)
This will show you all the profiles and their expiry dates. By selecting the (Details) link you can see the associated application ID.
