This is no idle threat. One of my apps was rendered completely useless on a customer's machine because I relied on type identifiers.

As much as an improvement the UTI system seems in theory, I have all but stopped using them for new file-related code. They offer little practical benefit given the serious liability of assuming there can be a single one-to-one mapping between file extensions and type identifiers across the entire system.
