Yup. :( I fear some malware will one day exploit this to cause a sort of
denial of service. One could probably create an app that does nothing
more than declare a bunch of UTIs for common extensions. If Launch
Services added that app to its database of bindings, then many other
apps could be broken. It probably won't affect Apple-provided UTIs,
since I believe those always take precedence, but still.
And before anyone asks, yes, I filed a Radar. In Oct 2007. <rdar://5540833>
