Did you try to drag the file from the Finder into the image well in Icon Composer corresponding to the size you want?
No, and thanks for the suggestion. But:
1. There is no image well corresponding to the size I want; the hard-coded sizes are the first major problem.
2. I don't see any way to save a PNG.
