There is that risk, and that's why we usually reset that preference when we make changes to that panel. So, the preference was reset when the list of recent projects was added to the panel in Xcode 3.2 back in 2009, and it was reset again with the release of Xcode 4 this year (or last year, if you were using the developer previews).
